Thank you, your suggestions got me started in basically the right direction. I ended up using the Post Format sections in style.css to change the way posts appear in index view. However I am also wondering is there a way to have posts appear differently in index view and single post view? I'm moderately experienced with CSS and HTML but have no real knowledge of PHP.
